The Reading Rush 2020!

The Reading Rush 2020!

The Reading Rush is a week long readathon for book lovers all around the world. For one week readers gather together to read as much as they possibly can and to participate in challenges and giveaways online. You can find out more here.

I’ve heard of the Reading Rush before, but usually part-way through so I’ve not participated. This year, though, I remembered it existed in time to get properly prepped for the prompts! What with YALC not happening as well, all of a sudden my birthday week - which I usually spend getting hyped for YALC and seeing my fave humans - looks very quiet, so I’m hoping a load of reading online with my fave humans in virtual form will make up for it.

And so here are my plans for the Reading Rush 2020…

1/ Read a book with a cover that matches the colour of your birth stone.

Are birth stones even a thing? Apparently so! I’ve googled mine, and it’s a ruby. Which is tricky, as I own very few books with red in the cover! So for this I’m bending the rules a bit (this becomes a theme with this TBR, whoops!) and going with Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi. There’s red on the spine. It totally counts.

2/ Read a book that starts with the word “The”.

For this prompt I’ll read either The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave or The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton. Both have been on my TBRs for ages, and The Mercies especially has been recommended to me by some of my best bookish friends, so it’s about time I get to these.

3/ Read a book that inspired a movie you’ve already seen.

I never ever read the book after watching the movie! What! So for this prompt I’m going to be a bit flexible, and instead add Alex and Eliza to my TBR for this week. I picked it up at YALC an age ago, and given I’ve already seen Hamilton… I’m totally counting this! (You can see my Hamilton Book Tag here)

4/ Read the first book you touch.

I don’t actually know how to do this given that I would just know where I put certain books, so I’ll be putting a poll on my twitter to help choose which book I should read for this prompt!

5/ Read a book completely outside of your house.

Highly unlikely to happen, unless the weather is good enough for me to do some very socially distant garden visits. Not going to pick a book for this, and instead just cross my fingers for a bit of dry weather!

6/ Read a book in a genre that you’ve always wanted to read more of.

Okay, so I’ve always wanted to read more sci-fi and this book has been sat on my shelf for a criminally long time: The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. I’m usually not interested unless there’s swords and magic, but I’ve only heard incredible things about this book so I’m determined to read it!

7/ Read a book that takes place on a different continent than where you live.

I’m currently reading Pride by Ibi Zoboi, and will use it for this prompt if I haven’t finished it before the Reading Rush starts, as I’m barely five chapters in to it. If not, I’m going to read Slay by Brittney Morris, which I think is set in the US as well. Also considering A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes, as that’s Greece, which I’m going to argue is a different continent to the UK? Bending the rules of geography, I’m sure…
